Bomel Construction’s Architectural and Site Concrete Division wins award for Roberts Pavilion Events Center at Claremont McKenna College

November 9, 2016––Most people who attend athletic events or students seeking a workout at Claremont McKenna College’s new Roberts Pavilion Events Center will be passionate about the games and exercise options inside the beautiful facility. It should also be easy to appreciate the stellar architectural and site concrete work on the building’s exterior produced by Bomel Construction’s Architectural and Site Concrete Division.

In fact, Bomel's outstanding craftsmanship greatly contributed to an award-winning project. Roberts Pavilion was a recent recipient of a merit award from the Los Angeles chapter of the American Institute of Architects. The LEED Gold-certified facility is named after alumnus and current trustee George R. Roberts.

Bomel’s scope of work on Roberts Pavilion helped to create an impressive profile for the structure. Two of the most striking features include a 30-step “grand” staircase that provides a conduit from the ground level to the second-floor entrance and the light sculpture––an oval outdoor seating area with 14 gray-colored iron benches and eight, gray antique light posts. Bomel also produced all perimeter walls, decorative walls, seat walls, a swimming pool deck and 50,000 square feet of concrete paving. The ground below the outdoor seating area was covered with a dark gray concrete seeded with crushed mirrored glass and black carbide.

“Some walls have a smooth, hard-trowel finish while others have a sandblasted finish,” said Brian Eshleman, Bomel’s estimator and project manager. “Integrating the decorative walls with the grand staircase was the biggest challenge. It was very intricate.”

Bomel's field and office staff worked hand in hand with the general contractor, architect and the owner’s representatives to timely identify potential problems or delays before providing and implementing cost-effective solutions.

The new pavilion, which doubles the size of predecessor Ducey Gymnasium, includes a three-story, 10,000-square-foot fitness studio with more than 60 treadmills, cross-trainers, exercise bikes, climbers, rowers, weight machines and other cardio equipment. The facility also features a 4,500-square-foot strength training room as well as exercise rooms for yoga, aerobics, spin, dance and other group classes. The events arena can seat about 2,200.

Claremont McKenna College is located in Claremont, a city of 36,000 on the eastern edge of Los Angeles County.
