Anaheim Hills-based Bomel Construction completes 1,500- space parking structure for City of Irvine several weeks ahead of schedule; project receives prestigious award from the American Public Works Association

IRVINE, Calif., November 10––In what has become almost routine fashion, the West’s leading builder of parking structures completed its latest project five weeks ahead of schedule, allowing a rapidly growing city to provide more parking to people using mass transportation.

“Bomel Construction’s performance and delivery throughout the entire project was exceptional,” said Kirk Streets, senior project manager with the City of Irvine, owner of the 1,500-space parking structure at 15215 Barranca Parkway. “My staff, OCTA, Caltrans, everybody associated with the project have nothing but good things to say about Bomel and the overall project itself.”

The primary purpose of the four-level structure, built adjacent to the busiest train station in Orange County, is to serve an average of 3,000 daily commuters using Amtrak and Metrolink rail service. The new structure more than triples the 435 parking spaces that were available in a surface lot on the same site. It is the first parking structure built by Irvine, population 202,000.

The $22.2-million parking structure in Irvine includes 6,000 square feet of space allocated for future retail space on the first floor. The 490,000-square-foot, cast-in-place concrete structure was built in 270 working days, said Gordon Crane, Bomel’s project executive.

In addition to general contractor Bomel, the project team included architect International Parking Design and construction manager Griffin Structures.

Irvine’s Streets said in the near future the parking structure will incorporate photovoltaic panels on the roof level as a means of capturing enough solar energy to provide electricity for the entire facility.

In October, the Southern California chapter of the American Public Works Association named the new parking structure as a “project of the year” award winner.
